About the role

The UKRI Governance, Assurance, Risk and Information Governance (GARI) function is part of the new UKRI Central Services team, working across the nine Councils with existing, diverse capabilities, and will be responsible for ensuring that the organisation operates best practice throughout its governance, accountability, risk management and information management arrangements.

You will work closely with others in the GARI team and other corporate colleagues to provide expertise and support decision-making, ensuring that UK Research and Innovation operates best practice throughout its governance, accountability, risk management and integrated assurance arrangements.

You will support the Head of Risk and Counter Fraud to establish a positive risk management and counter fraud culture across UKRI. You will act as a risk business partner, gaining an in-depth understanding of parts to the organisation and building strong working relationships, to facilitate and support the effective management of risk.


  • assist in the development and implement robust risk management arrangements for UKRI. Working closely with UKRI Central Services, the Councils and major programmes, to develop and implement an appropriate policy, strategy and support arrangements that align with UK Research and Innovation’s overall risk framework; ensuring compliance with relevant international and, Government standards and best practice for risk management and counter fraud
  • assist in ensuring the mechanisms, frameworks and policies meet both organisational requirements for risk management – based on an in-depth understanding of the business requirements of UKRI
  • support the Head of Risk in the development of the risk and counter fraud function in UKRI, bringing together existing staff from eight autonomous bodies into one stable organisational structure addressing the challenges presented by the multiplicity of legacy systems and cultures.

About you

It is essential that you are an experienced risk professional and have a good understanding and working knowledge of prevailing governance, risk and assurance standards and public-sector rules.

You must have experience working with executive teams and being a trusted advisor to senior management and have experience in developing and implementing effective risk management strategies and frameworks in an organisation.
